The Minister of Transport Works and Infrastructure Hon. Ebrima Sillah has expressed displeasure with scrap metal retailers and automobile repairers that litter the newly constructed roads with their vehicles, and wastes. “I am very upset with these auto-mechanics and scrap metal businesses, that are dumping waste into the gutters and used engine oils onto our roads that are yet to be commissioned,” he stressed.
The Minister made these remarks on Saturday, 2nd November 2024, at Brufut, during the continuation of his project sites inspection tour within the Greater Banjul Area. Minister Sillah urged the public to take ownership of the roads and maintain them clean all the time. He warned that anyone who is caught littering the roads will be dealt with seriously. “I urge the local government councils, communities and the public to take ownership and to maintain the cleanliness of these roads. They should report anyone who litters or dumps rubbish on these gutters,” he admonished.
Mr Joseph Raymond Sandy, Project Manager, PAVI-Ford said that they have made a progress of over 90% along the Wullinkama-Brufut-Ghana Town Road. “We are confident that we will meet the addendum timeline of the 15 November 2024,” he said. Sulayman Sumareh Janneh, Deputy Managing Director of the National Roads Authority (NRA) said his office has been keenly working with the consultants to ensure that the contractors deliver quality, and standards are met in terms of engineering works and design.
“We have our site engineers working with our consultants to ensure contractors deliver not only first class roads but also roads that are durable,” he added. The Minister and entourage started their site visit at P16 GTMI- Kanifing General Hospital, P2 Kanifing-Methodist, P15 Bundung Latrikunda P10 Amsterdam-Junction Ba Road, the Muhammad Jah Junction-Brufut Road and the Wullinkama- Brufut- Ghana Town Roads, which are part of the 50km OIC roads. Honourable Sillah expressed satisfaction with the progress of works he visited so far.
