The National Conference on Education Sector Policy Review wrapped up on Friday, December 15th 2023 at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre in Bijilo. The four-day gathering, which began on the 12th of December, marked the final phase of the comprehensive review process for The Gambia’s education sector policy (2016-2030).
In his opening address, His Excellency Vice President Mohammed B.S Jallow emphasised the historic significance of the occasion, recalling his involvement as the then Director of Planning, Policy Analysis, Research, and Budgeting Directorate during the policy’s formulation. He praised the exhaustive consultation process, involving key stakeholders like UNICEF, the World Bank, Child Fund, WFP, and UNFPA Country representatives.
The Vice President lauded the recent government initiatives, spotlighting the construction of 775 new classrooms and 1,030 toilet facilities. This, he noted, showcases an unwavering commitment to enhancing educational facilities and uplifting teacher welfare. Noteworthy achievements included the completion of Lot I of the University of The Gambia Development Project and ongoing transformations at the Management Development Institute and The Gambia College, signalling a renewed focus on tertiary education.
VP Jallow celebrated the surge in enrollment rates, particularly in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), challenging preconceived notions about the discipline. The government’s dedication to foundational literacy, numeracy, and skills development for critical thinking and creativity was underscored.
The ceremony featured crucial insights from Honourable Ministers of Basic and Secondary Education, Tertiary and Higher Education, the UNICEF Country Representative, World Bank Country Representative, and MRC Holland Foundation’s Country Coordinator. These pivotal statements underlined the collective commitment towards shaping the future of education in The Gambia.
As the conference progressed, stakeholders engaged in substantive discussions to address challenges and integrate innovative initiatives. The revised policy is anticipated to have a profound impact on the trajectory of education in The Gambia, symbolizing the government’s resolute dedication to providing quality education and fostering national development.
