The Science and Technology Education Directorate (STED) under the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE), in collaboration with GAMBEGA Ltd and Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS) on Thursday, 30th November hosted the Fanta Science and Mathematics National Quiz Competition 2022/23 award ceremony, and launched the 2023/24 edition at Nusrat Senior Secondary School (SSS) Hall, in Bundung.
The event aimed to recognise the significant efforts of all the participating schools in the competition, as well as award prizes to wining schools.
Nusrat SSS took the first position, followed by Charles Jow SSS in second position, Muslim SSS securing third position, and Masroor SSS fourth position.
In his opening remarks, Dr. Babou Joof, the quiz competition coordinator and the chair of the award ceremony, stated that the Fanta Science and Mathematics quiz is a renowned educational programme initiated and funded by GAMBEGA since 2009, aimed at promoting and encouraging science and mathematics education for the socio-economic advancement of The Gambia.
“The significance of science education cannot be overemphasised because we need mathematics, physics, biology, and chemistry teachers in our schools to teach the children to become doctors, engineers, mathematicians, and teachers in the sciences. He thanked MoBSE, GRTS, and GAMBEGA LTD for the sponsorship; as well as teachers, parents, and students for the support throughout the journey.
The Director of Science and Technology Education Directorate, Mr Ousman Bah emphasised the pivotal role of science and mathematics in fostering innovation, discovery, and societal progress. He stressed that the quiz competition goes beyond winning; that it aims to ignite a lifelong passion for these subjects.
“The Fanta Science and Mathematics quiz is a learning experience that extends beyond the classroom walls and encourages peer work, curiosity, exploration, and a lifelong learning and zeal for the aforementioned subjects. As we witness the impressive minds at work, let us remember that this quiz is not just about winning, but about strengthening our love and passion in embracing the process of learning Science nd Mathematics,” Director Bah stated.
The Principal of Nusrat Senior Secondary School, Mr. Mamadi Ceesay highlighted the importance of science in developing technologies, solving practical problems, and understanding the law of nature. He went on to explain that a strong base in science is important for a thriving economy and can help us appreciate the natural beauty of the world around us.
John Bass, West Africa Import Countries Finance Manager GAMBEGA LTD, representing the CEO of GAMBEGA LTD, noted the competition’s role in nurturing the intellectual curiosity of senior secondary school students. He underscored the essential nature of a robust foundation in science and mathematics for critical thinking, problem solving, and innovation.
“In the ever-evolving landscape of global challenges, a strong foundation in science and mathematics is not just desirable but but essential for the development of critical thinking, problem solving skills, and innovation,” Mr Bass stressed.
Mr Kemo Jatta, Director of Marketing at GRTS, described the initiative as a crucial educational programme and pledged continued support. He called on other companies and institutions to contribute to the success of the initiative.
