Members of NCM Trained on Global Compact for Migration

A two-day capacity building exercise have been organized for members of the National Coordination Mechanism on Migration (NCM) on the Global Compact for Migration (GCM).

The training was facilitated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in The Gambia through The UN Migration Network.

The training aimed to enhance the capacity of government stakeholders, enabling them to accurately report on migration issues in The Gambia, particularly the GCM.

The Director of Diaspora and Migration of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad, Ndumbeh Saho, opened the forum on behalf of the Permanent Secretary I, Ambassador Lang Yabou.

In her remarks the Director said the gathering marked a significant step forward in the nation’s commitment to upholding the principles and objectives of the GCM, reaffirming the Government’s pledge to safeguard the rights, dignity, and well-being of all migrants.”

She explained that the National Implementation Plan would serve as both a roadmap for addressing migration challenges and a framework for strengthening community resilience and protecting migrant rights. “Additionally, the plan underscores the government’s commitment to fostering international cooperation, promoting safe migration pathways, and upholding the human rights of all individuals involved in the migration process”.

Programmed Officer at IOM, Aji Sukai Cham, explained that the session was the first in a series of trainings involving NCM members, civil society, and the UN Country Team’s migration focal points.

The Gambia has made substantial progress in migration reporting, advancing from covering 15 priority GCM objectives to reporting on all 23 objectives.
