Visiting Ecowas Commission Head Impressed with Gambia’s Reforms Efforts

The Gambian president, Adama Barrow on Tuesday, December 1st received His Excellency Jean-Claude Kass, President of ECOWAS Commission, and his delegation at State House in Banjul, where the head of the sub-regional body expressed to the press his positive impressions about the country’s efforts towards peace and democratic reforms.

“Ecowas is aware of the reform process that is going on in The Gambia and it will continue to support and work with the government of The Gambia”. He said their priority is for Gambia to continue to have peace, adding, “it is good for Gambians and also for Ecowas”.

Mr Jean-Claude Kass also made reference to the ongoing Truth, Reconciliation and Reparation Commission, saying the process is important. He pledged Ecowas’s support to The Gambia; particularly its economy and security sectors.

On the Covid-19 pandemic, the Ecowas Commission boss said the body is fully aware of the efforts made by Gambia government and other Ecowas governments in fighting the viral disease. Commenting on the ECOMIG, he explained that the resource used to support ECOMIG in The Gambia is the same resource Ecowas used to support ECOMIG in Guinea Bissau and other West African countries. This, he revealed is contribution from Ecowas member countries, donation from partners such as European Union, United Nations among others.

“It is the heads of armies in Ecowas countries that meet and give recommendation for the [presence of] Ecowas troops in a particular country,” he further explained, adding that the report of their meeting is submitted to Ecowas Council of Ministers. “The Council also will discuss and then submit report to the Ecowas heads of state and action will be taken,” he further asserted.

Mr Jean Cluade Kassi Brou and his delegation were accompanied to State House by Momodou Tangara, Gambian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Sheikh Omar Sey, Minister of Defence.
