On Wednesday, April 14th The Gambia Paralympic Athletic and Powerlifting team was at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, where they presented their well-deserved medals following their impressive outing at the recently-concluded World Para Powerlifting Championships in Manchester and Tunisia.
The team was led by the members of the Gambia National Paralympic Committee (GNPC) at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.
The team says the courtesy call on the Minister afforded them the opportunity to show their appreciation to the Youth and Sports ministry and to discuss ways of strengthening the relationship between the GNPC and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
Abdoulie Danso, head coach of the paralympic athletics team; and Hagie Drammeh, coach for the powerlifting team, both called for more support from the Committee. They pointed out that lack of proper equipment and facilities do inhibit their participation and performance at these global competitions.
Speaking to the team, Youth and Sports minister Badjie thanked the members for the visit, and expressed delight at their success at the world championships. Your success is the greater success of the entire country, because you participated in the name of The Gambia.
He assured of the Ministry and Government’s continual supports to the team and sports development in general.
In a related but separate development, Real de Banjul Football club on Wednesday, 14th of April, donated two sets of football Jerseys and five footballs to the amputee football team.
The materials were presented by Real de Banjul President Willy Abraham and 1st Vice President Bakary Jammeh to the GNPC Vice President Sainey Colley.
