The Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission told press that they were at State House on Wednesday, January 8th to brief the President of the Republic about their work and give appraisal of the human rights situation in the country. This was the first time the five-member Commission met with the President since members were appointed and sworn-in in February 2019. Emmanuel Joof went on to affirm that their mandate is to protect and promote human rights in the country. He said they have conducted some monitoring and investigation exercises, as well as held meetings in all the regions in the country, sensitising people about human rights. “We were also working and collaborating with other national human rights organisations in Africa, UN, and others in the world”. Joof mentioned resource constraint as one of their challenges. He described the meeting as very good and friendly.
