The Ministry of Health, New Yundum Village Development Committee (VDC), Mama Africa Gambia Foundation and Wilde Ganzen Netherland Foundation inaugurated a state-of-the-art maternity ward at New Yundum Health Centre.
The construction of the new ward was jointly financed by Mama Africa Foundation, who contributed 60% of the project and New Yundum VDC contributing 40%.
The new ward comprises a theatre, nurse station, antenatal and postnatal wards with 24-bed capacity, four labor rooms and a consultancy room, among others.
Mr. Jerrey Manneh, the CEO of the Mama Afrca Foundation for The Gambia said Mama Africa is a non-profitable foundation working with partners to raise funds to strive for access in education and healthcare services as their emerging areas of intervention.
Mr. Sarjo Kanyi, a surgeon, focal person for health and a member the VDC said their objective is that no woman should die during child delivery.
He explained that the Yundum Maternity is among the best facilities within the Kombos in delivery of maternity care.
Sarjo Kanyi further thanked the Mama Africa Foundation for Gambia for ensuring effective and efficient health service delivery and also commended Wilde Ganzen Foundation Netherland and VDC for their joint efforts in financing this life-saving edifice.
Yiva Dantuma, a Project Advisor underscored the importance of the new maternity ward, stating that it will significantly help in ensuring safe delivery for women.She described the facility as magnificent and a milestone achievement that would bring relief to the people.
