Saffiatou Joof, a renowned female poet, author, women’s right activist and founder of Nna Kala Poetic Academy recently published her book, titled ‘Words on War’. In an interview with Gambia Daily, she said the book has two hundred poem collections on abortion, abuse, black magic and corruption.

She explained that poetry is her way of speaking about issues that are affecting people and a means to understand and learn how to take on certain situations in life.

She acknowledged that as a writer in The Gambia one is accorded some privileges, opportunities and assistance from professors, intellectuals and the community at large.

However, Ms. Joof lamented that sponsors and getting the book designed are one of the challenges that she faced.

“As an activist, I know the powers of words. In order to effect change, young people have to get in touch and understand what they want and work toward that interest,’’ she said.

Ms. Joof said this is her second published book, adding that she plans to make writing her future endeavor.
