Star Media’s New Structure, Powerful Affirmation of Transformation in Gambia’s Media Sector -President Barrow

Banjul, 27th February 2025: President Adama Barrow on Monday 24th February 2025 officially inaugurated the new building of Star FM/TV, located along Bertil Harding Highway in Kanifing East.
In his inauguration statement, President Barrow highlighted that this multi-million-Dalasi project is not merely about unveiling a new structure; rather “it is a powerful affirmation of the ongoing transformation within The Gambia’s media sector”.
He also described the development as a milestone that reflects the government’s unwavering commitment to freedom of expression, democracy, and national development.
The Gambian leader said since taking office in 2017, his administration has prioritised the establishment of an open and thriving media environment, exemplified by the enactment of the Access to Information Act, which demonstrates a clear commitment to media freedom, transparency, and sound governance.
“A strong and independent media sector is an essential pillar of democracy. We will continue to vigorously support initiatives that empower the press to operate freely, fairly, and effectively. The media’s role in nation-building is crucial. Media outlets inform, educate, and entertain, possessing the unique power to unite our nation while driving accountability and civic engagement,” President Barrow emphasised.
He urged the management and staff of Star FM/TV to relentlessly pursue excellence, uphold ethical journalism, and seize new technologies to reach broader audiences and enhance their services continuously.
In his remarks, Haji Baniko Sissoko is owner and proprietor of Star FM Radio and Television said the media has a new day in The Gambia in terms of media freedom thanks to President Adama Barrow and his government.
He also expressed gratitude to all the media houses for their support and  for gracing the occasion. 
Mr Sissoko informed that only Gambians are working at both Star FM and Television.
He called on well-off Gambians to invest in building companies in order to create jobs for Gambians and help grow the economy.
Alpha Karaga, Chief Executive Officer of Star FM/TV, affirmed that the inauguration of the new facility marks a decisive milestone in the station’s “13 years of excellence in broadcasting”.
He said the inauguration is not just a celebration but a testament to growth, resilience, and the pursuit of education.
“Star FM/TV unequivocally aims to educate, entertain, and inform the public, reinforcing their role as a trusted media house in The Gambia,” stated CEO Karaga.
Mr. Karaga also underscored the media’s critical role in producing and presenting news, particularly during elections. 
He expressed deep appreciation to all partners who contributed to transforming Star TV into a respected institution.
Ms Isatou Keita, President of Gambia Press Union underscored the importance of media in maintaining peace, emphasizing that journalists have great responsibility to report truth and fact. 
She urged Star FM/TV to invest in emerging talents, provide mentorship, and create a platform that enables budding journalists to refine their skills and contribute meaningfully to the national discourse.
President Barrow received the Media Freedom Award from Star TV.
