Officials of the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) alongside the National Sports Council, recently toured football fields in Diabugou , Bwiam, Julafarr, Janjanbureh, and Sandu in the Upper River Region, aimed to assess the impact of the sports infrastructure development taking place across the country on local communities.
Alagie Moya Baldeh, Chairperson of the Upper River Region (URR), noted the significance of the fields, describing them as haven for the youth. “The space fosters talent, unity, and a sense of belonging, offering opportunities for healthy competition and teamwork,” he added.
Jambereh Trawally, Chairperson of the Sports Association of the Central River Region (CRR), said the construction has sparked new enthusiasm for sports, with boys and girls actively participating in regular training and matches.
Musa Marong, Auditor General of the Julafarr Youth and Sports Association in the Lower River Region (LRR), underscored how the fields have allowed local talent to flourish, bringing joy to the community.
In Bwiam, Saikou Sanyang, Regional Sports Chairperson, praised the unifying effect of the fields, saying they have become gathering spots for residents from diverse backgrounds. Similarly, Samba Keita, Chairman of the Foni Sports Committee, acknowledged that the fields benefit the entire Foni region, and that the communities are working together to maintain and improve the facilities.
The football matches, marked by excitement and cheering crowds, have fostered a much-needed sense of togetherness. Beyond sports, the fields have contributed to the physical well-being and social engagement of the youth, keeping them active and involved in positive activities.
While the facilities have positively impacted many communities, the ministry’s efforts also face challenges. The team noted setbacks in the development of the Fulabantang and Kafuta football fields and called for the construction of more recreational centres to benefit the youth further.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports has significantly improved local communities by constructing football fields across The Gambia. These fields have fostered youth engagement, teamwork, and community unity, while also contributing to physical well-being. However, some areas face development challenges; hence calls for further investment in recreational centres for the youth.
