Rule of law expert in Gambia to support drafting of new constitution

His Excellency President Adama Barrow on Friday, 21st February received at State House, Sir Jeffrey Jowell QC of Birmingham Centre for Rule of Law in the United Kingdom.

Sir Jowell affirmed to the press that he is in the country to assist the drafting of the new constitution of The Gambia. He said they are very impressed with the process and the fact that so many Gambians are involved in the consultation. He added that the draft constitution has in many ways met global standard, particularly the standard of the Commonwealth, with issues of human rights, and good governance well-articulated.

Sharon Wardle, British High Commission to The Gambia, said she is delighted to have Sir Jeffrey Jowell talk to different stakeholders on rule of law.

She said the Commonwealth has a lot of initiatives and that it has been giving support in so many forms to countries including Gambia; such as assistance on cyber security and constitutional and transitional justice processes.

Madam Wardle then announced that a Commonwealth envoy will visit The Gambia later next week to talk about further opportunities for The Gambia
