His Excellency President Adama Barrow on Saturday, 25th June 2022 led a mass cleaning exercise in the capital city of Banjul. Participating in this exercise along with the President were the Vice President, ministers, personnel of the security forces, residents of Banjul and supporters of the President.
Speaking to the media right after the clean-up exercise, President Barrow made reference to the infrastructure works his government is embarking on in the capital city, in terms of roads, sewage and drainage rehabilitation works, and expressed satisfaction with the progress of the works. The clean-up he said was to complement the ongoing works in his quest to transforming Banjul into a respectable city.
“We want the clean-up to be continuous exercise. People should come out to clean their environment,” he stressed.
The President expressed appreciation and gratitude over the large turnout for the exercise.
“We should think of doing this countrywide and not just in Banjul. We will propose another day to clean The Gambia, and then once every month. We will give a name for it that is suitable,” he announced.
The Minister of Information, Lamin Quin Jammeh noted the significance of the exercise, saying it will improve the sanitary condition of Banjul and ensure water flows freely as blockages are removed from water ways – gutters and channels.
Interior Minister Siaka Sonko; and Lands Minister Abba Sanyang both advised against littering and pointed out the need to keep the environment clean for healthy living.
