The program manager of the National Council for Civic Education (NCCE) Yusupha Bojang has told this paper that the level of awareness of Gambians on politics is increasing, although he said there is still room for improvement.
Bojang made this remark yesterday, October 2nd in Kaiaf, Kiang East. The NCCE is on an outreach dubbed ‘National dialogue on democratic governance, tolerance, and reconciliation. The initiative is meant consolidate democratic governance and peaceful coexistence.
Further in his remarks, the Programme Officer observed that a lot of people are showing interest in politics and governance. “ You see everybody commenting on issues that are happening. Even the youths have built interest. At first, it was only the elderly who were interested in political discussions. This awareness came due to numerous engagements”.
He said engagements like the one they are embarking on help end some of the misconceptions about democracy, and people become aware of their rights and limits.
Bojang, therefore, called partners and other stakeholders to continue to organise similar forums for peace to prevail in the country.
He went on to call on people especially politicians to completely stay away from tribalism, which he described as dangerous and urged on Gambians to love one another and to stop insulting one another on social media.
Elsewhere in Medina Angelleh, both Bakary Colley and Ousman Jawo hailed the initiative and called on NCCE to sanitize the media, especially the radio stations, accusing them of abusing democracy.
