The Honourable Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Professor Pierre Gomez, recently presided over the official deployment of the Virtual Reality (VR) Technology pilot project for the education sector. This project is aimed at integrating immersive learning experiences into classrooms, enhancing teaching and learning outcomes for both students and teachers.
This initiative, funded by ICESCO and implemented in collaboration with Avantis Education UK, is designed to equip Gambian educators with cutting-edge educational technologies. The VR technology will allow students to explore complex scientific concepts, experience historical events firsthand, and engage in interactive lessons, bridging the gap between theory and practice.
Speaking at the official deployment of the pilot project at St. Joseph’s Secondary School, the Honourable Minster of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, Professor Pierre Gomez, expressed delight and pride for his Ministry’s collaboration with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and key education technology partners, to launch the project, calling it a transformative step in modernising education in The Gambia.
Minister Gomez stated that the initiative aims to integrate immersive learning experiences into classrooms, providing students and teachers with cutting-edge digital tools that enhance engagement, comprehension, and practical learning. “Through VR technology, students can explore complex scientific concepts, experience historical events firsthand, and engage in interactive lessons that bridge the gap between theory and practice”, he stated.
Professor Pierre Gomez reaffirmed the government’s commitment to this deployment of innovative technology initiatives and stated that this project will leverage digital education solutions to improve learning outcomes and equip students with the skills needed for the future. The pilot, he said, will serve as a model for future nationwide adoption, ensuring that Gambian learners benefit from the latest advancements in educational technology.
The launch event was supported by key stakeholders, including the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE), the Gambia National Commission for UNESCO, and ICESCO.
