Mining Indaba 2025: Gambia Seeks to Strengthen Mining Prospects

The Gambia is actively positioning itself in the global mining sector, as a delegation from the Ministry of Petroleum, Energy, and Mines (MoPEM) recently participated in the Mining Indaba 2025 conference in Cape Town, South Africa.  This  year’s theme is, ‘Future-Proofing African Mining Today’.
This prestigious event brings together industry leaders, investors, and experts to discuss sustainable development, new technologies, and investment opportunities in Africa’s mining sector.
 The Gambian delegates were engaged in high-level discussions aimed at securing investments, technological collaborations, and capacity building initiatives for the country’s mining industry.
A key highlight of The Gambia’s participation at Mining Indaba 2025 is its involvement in the Korea-Africa Critical Minerals Dialogue, where the delegation engaged with South Korean officials to explore partnerships in mineral exploration, training, and technology transfer. 
Additionally, bilateral discussions were held with India’s Ministry of Mines to explore avenues for technical assistance in geological surveys and mineral exploration, a strategic move aimed at unlocking The Gambia’s untapped mineral resources.
During the event the Gambian delegation continued to engage with key global players to further explore investment prospects and technical cooperation in the mining sector.
The country’s commitment to fostering international partnerships underscores its vision for a robust and competitive mining industry that aligns with global best practices.
With strong engagements at Mining Indaba 2025, The Gambia demonstrated its readiness to embrace innovation and investment in mining.
The discussions with South Korea, India, and other stakeholders highlighted the country’s ambition to enhance its mining capabilities through technology, expertise, and strategic alliances.
By attending this event, The Gambia hoped to learn from other countries, gain access to better technology, and create opportunities for training and development. These efforts will help build a stronger and more sustainable mining industry that benefits the nation.
The Gambia’s delegation comprised of the Deputy Permanent Secretary at MoPEM, Mr Alagie Manjang; Director of the Geological Department, Alieu Jawo; Principal Assistant Secretary, Mr Yira Jammeh; and Senior Geological Technician, Mr Lamin M. Nyassi.
