Mariama Jammeh –Iroegbu, a young Gambian fashion designer and a BA holder in development studies, shared with Gambia Daily Life & Entertainment her passion and inspiration for becoming a fashion designer. She said she was interested in creativity and entrepreneurship since she was a little girl. “I am a BA holder in development studies but my passion for fashion and interior decoration motivated me to pursue a career in fashion design and my business ‘Him and Her Fashion’”, she said.
She added that she has no background in fashion design but her passion for fashion design pushed her into self-educating through the help of social media especially YouTube.
She said that she provides different range of African fabrics and tailoring services. “We have in store a collection of beautiful ready-to wear outfits for all ages and gender,” she said.
She reveals that she employed three young people and thereby contributing to boosting the local economy.
“I always try to stay up to date with the latest trends and thanks to technology. The competition is very high but because of our innovative design and our prices, we are always ahead of our competitors,” she said.
The young entrepreneur said that she handles both negative and positive criticism because she said she believes it helps one to grow.
She added that the important lesson she learnt in fashion industry is to be patient and innovative.
Mariama said women’s economic empowerment is the sure way for holistic national development.
