PSC Sensitises Regional Authorities about Commission’s Mandates

By Lamin B. Darboe

The Public Service Commission (PSC), led by its Chairman has embarked on an outreach to the regions, where they have been meeting with governors and executive coordinators, to sensitise them about the mandate of the Commission.
On Thursday, August 8, day three of the outreach, the team was at North Bank Region (NBR), where they held an interactive discussion with the Governor, Mr. Lamin Saidykhan, the seven district chiefs and the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) members within the region, held  at the Governor’s office in Kerewan.
The PSC Chairman, Boubacarr A Suwareh affirmed to the NBR Governor and team that their visit to his office was to inform them about his institution’s mandates but also to hear from the regional authorities their achievements and constraints within their various institutions.
“PSC is mandated under section 173 of the 1997 Constitution to recruit, promote, train, and discipline public officials within the public service. The Commission is also mandated to strengthen performance and facilitate effective and efficient service delivery,” the Chairman explained.
To achieve this task, Mr. Suwareh went on, requires an outreach programme to establish issues or constraints affecting or confronting public service institutions and the support they would require from the Public Service Commission.
According to Mr. Suwareh, the outreach will enable the Commissioners establish first-hand information on issues affecting civil servants within their various workplace that would require the Commission’s involvement to address the situation.
“I am impressed with the presence of all seven chiefs in NBR; even though they are not directly answerable to the PSC they are key partners to the Governor’s office. Their presentce will add value to this meeting as they are the host to the civil servants within their respective districts,” said PSC Chairman.
Governor Saidykhan for his part, thanked PSC for their laudable initiative. He explained that his office’s mandate is to represent the President and Government in the region, monitor all government projects and programmes and connect with other government institutions within his region in relations to issues of public interest.
Chiefs Alhaji Jagne of Central Badibou, Malick Bouye of Sabach Sanjally and Fabala Kinteh of Lower Badibou all lauded PSC chairman and team’s visit to NBR as a landmark history.
