The Vice President of The Gambia, His Excellency Mohammed BS Jallow officially launched the preliminary report of the 2024 Population and Housing Census at an event, held at the Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre. The event was attended by key government officials, development partners, and representatives from various sectors.
In his address, the Vice President posited that census goes beyond mere numbers—“it reflects the stories of Gambian citizens and provides critical data for informed decision-making. The findings will guide policy-making in areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and social protection, ensuring equitable socio-economic growth and progress, in alignment with national and international development goals, including the SDGs”.
The report sheds light on key demographic trends, urbanisation, and housing conditions, supporting the government’s efforts in the Recovery-Focused National Development Plan (RSNDP).
VP Jallow praised the hard work of the National Statistics Council, The Gambia Bureau of Statistics (GBoS) staff, and all who contributed to the census, recognising the essential role it plays in shaping The Gambia’s future.
As more detailed results on health, education, gender, and other areas follow, the Vice President urged stakeholders to engage with the data and use it to drive inclusive and sustainable development.
“Together, let us ensure that the data we have gathered serves its highest purpose: advancing our collective vision for The Gambia—a nation that thrives on inclusivity, opportunity, and sustainable development for all,” he said.
Other key speakers included the Hon. Minister of Finance, Director General of GBoS, UN Resident Coordinator, UNFPA Country Representative, World Bank Country Rep, among others.
