Banjul, 6th March: March is women’s history month globally marking an annual observance to highlight the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. This year’s them is, “For All Women and Girls: Rights, Equality, and Empowerment”.
Delivering a statement to mark the significance of the month, The Gambian Minister of Gender, Children and Social Welfare, Honourable Fatou Kinteh paid homage to Gambia women for what she called their resilience, strength and remarkable contributions to society. “We gather to celebrate and reaffirm our commitment to the rights, equality, and empowerment of all women and girls, with a special focus on women with disabilities”
. She said theme is a powerful call to action, reminding about the importance of inclusivity in the quest for gender equality and social justice.
She said the International Women’s Day is not just a day of celebration; that it is a day of reflection, advocacy, and renewed commitment to breaking barriers and creating an inclusive society where every woman and girl can thrive, regardless of their ability or circumstance.
The Minister said the government of The Gambia has made significant strides in promoting gender equality and disability inclusion. However, she acknowledged that there is still much work to be done. “As a nation, we must ensure that the voices of women with disabilities are heard, their rights are protected, and their contributions are valued. This means actively implementing policies that promote accessibility, equal opportunities, and protection from all forms of discrimination and violence”.
Highlighting progress, Madam Kinteh made reference to Government’s remarkable dedication to enacting relevant policies and laws that promote gender equality and protect the rights of women and girls; such as the Women’s Act 2010, Domestic Violence Act, Sexual Offences Act 2013 and the Person with Disability Act 2021. These and other legal frameworks, she said have laid a strong foundation for creating an inclusive society where women, including those with disabilities, can live with dignity and security.
The Gender Minister urged for the empowerment women with disabilities by investing in skills training, mentorship, and in economic opportunities that allow them to lead independent and fulfilling lives.
On education, she assured that government and its development partners will continue to ensure that schools are inclusive, accessible, and equipped with resources to support students with disabilities. Girls with disabilities must be given equal opportunities to learn, grow, and aspire to their dreams, free from societal stereotypes and discrimination.
On political participation, the Minister said women with disabilities must be given opportunities to engage in decision-making processes and leadership roles, noting that their perspectives are invaluable in shaping policies that impact their lives and the broader society.
She reaffirmed her unwavering commitment to continue advocating for policies and programmes that uplift all women and girls, particularly those with disabilities.
The Honourable minister extended sincere gratitude to His Excellency, the President of The Gambia, for his continuous commitment to fostering a society that embraces gender equality and social inclusion. Under his leadership, The Gambia continues to make significant progress in promoting the rights and welfare of women and girls, ensuring a brighter future for all.
