The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) on Friday, 4th October 2024 officially announced the release of the 2024 Gambia Basic Education Certificate Examination (GABECE) Results, at a press conference held at the ministry in Banjul.
Deputy Permanent Secretary (DPS) Programmes, Mr Adama Jimba Jobe, who chaired the press conference, gave a brief analysis of the results, highlighting the challenges and the way forward.
The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education (MoBSE) Loiuse Moses Mendy began by acknowledging public concern about the late release of the results, describing it as a  show of interest in their children’s education.
He explained that GABEC is a national exams, and that the conduct of the exams is entirely under the purview of the West African Examination Council (WAEC).
“WAEC is an independent body and conducts the exams freely without influence by the ministry,” he emphasised.
The Permanent clarified that the delay was not due to the fact that the Ministry owes WAEC, contrary to some rumors.
About the results, Mr Mendy had this to say: “As a ministry we analyse the results, compare them with the previous years and look at the gender and regional dynamics. This helps us in our endeavour to reinforce some of the strategies required to strengthen students’ performance. That informs us as a ministry and government to know the areas we need to invest more.”
He added that the statistical analysis of the results will inform the ministry about the strength and areas of improvement. He reported that this year’s results are outstanding compared to the past two years.
Presenting the statistical analysis of the results of the 2024 GABECE, the Director of Performance, Monitoring and Evaluation Directorate (PMED), Mr Andrew Gomez affirmed that there is massive improvement on this year’s results compared to previous years.
