The Minister of Agriculture Dr Demba Sabally on Friday, July 26th led the management of the National Food Security Processing and Marketing Corporation (NFSPMC), formerly known as GGC, to State House, where they had audience with President Barrow.
The Minister told the press that they were in Banjul to brief the President on their activities and in particular the proposed recapitalisation of the corporation and the development of the cooperative societies, and river transport.
He informed that the cardinal challenge of NFSPMC is capital, “because GGC was involved in the importation of rice, oil and other commodities, thereby reduced prices of rice, oil and others in the country; but now the capital is weak, they need to recapitalise”.
The Minister also stated that agric cooperative societies in the country are very weak; hence having trouble with their agencies that are spread across the country selling fertilizer, and buying groundnut on behalf of NFSPMC.
He reminded that cabinet had already approved the re-capitalisation plan of NFSPMC and they are engaging donor partners to support.
On cooperative societies, Hourable Sabally said he had presented a cabinet paper for the creation of a department of cooperative development with a position of a registrar general equal to director.
