In the global effort to raise awareness on breast cancer, October has been designated as the pink month-  a month in which efforts are heightened to educate those concerned about the disease, including early identification, signs and symptoms.

To end the commemoration of the 2023 pink month, the Ministry of Health has joined the rest of the world to raise awareness on the current situation of breast cancer in The Gambia and its prevention.

In an interview, Bintou Cham, a health communication officer at the Ministry of Health, warned that breast cancer has no boundaries; that it affects people of all ages, genders and backgrounds. However, she said with early detection, timely treatment and promoting regular self-examination, a significant number of people can be prevented from this condition and the chances of survival for breast cancer patients would be increased.

“I want to take this moment to remind everyone about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, conducting regular screenings and mammography, and supporting breast cancer patients towards recovery,” she advised.

Ms Cham called for concerted efforts to raise awareness and uplift those who have been affected by breast cancer.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month serves as a powerful reminder of the strength, resilience, and determination that define the people of our beloved country, says Sona Darboe, another health communication officer at the Ministry of Health.

She however enthused it is also a battle that can be fought and won when people come together with knowledge, compassion, and determination.
