Dr. Muhammad Ibin Chambas, who has been in the country for the Gambia’s constitutional review process as ECOWAS special envoy, has lauded the Gambia government’s initiative to launch a national dialogue.
During his visit to His Excellency President Adama Barrow at State House last week, Dr Chambas affirmed to the press that he is in the country to update the President on the joint mission of United Nations and IDEA to work with the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice and the National Assembly on the constitutional review process.
He reminded that in August 2023, discussions were initiated to start the process but since then different institutions continued on this process. This time around, he said the team will be with the Honorable members of parliament to work and focus on issues that were sources of detachment that did not make it possible to complete the process.
“I think there is a new will power on the part of all to complete this process. This as a referendum process; … partners … are willing and able to accompany The Gambia through a successful process,” he assured.
The envoy praised “The Gambian process” describing it as “quite interesting”. He went on: “It should be a legacy programme of the current government so that when it is accomplished all Gambians can be proud of a new constitution for the country”.
He seized the opportunity to express satisfaction over the recently convened national dialogue which he said is important and historic, as it maps a way forward for national development.
The national dialogue, the international diplomat went on, “is an opportunity for The Gambia to come together and discuss issues of the national interest, which can deepen the country’s democracy and tackle its challenges, putting national interest above any other concern”.
