The Ministry of Information and Communication Infrastructure (MoICI) has rolled out a digital addressing system in the country dubbed Google Plus Codes Addressing (PCA), and are piloting this initiative in Banjul and Kanifing Municipality.
Having completed Banjul, the Ministry says in a press release that in collaborating with the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC), they have completed the first phase of Digital Addressing solution and would now embark on the Address Boards Fixing (ABF) stage, which is expected to start on 20th September, 2021.
The implementation team is expected to fix the address boards (tags) at every property within the Kanifing Municipality, including but not limited to residents, businesses and other landmarks.
Serigne Modou Bah is the project coordinator of the PCA and he spoke to Gambia Daily to shed more light on the initiative.
“We thought before we set out a full nationwide rollout it will make sense to have a pilot project somewhere; at least to check the viability of the solution”.
Mr Bah said they would be Brikama Area Council and Barra and Essau as their next action as far as rollout of the solution is concerned. “Our ultimate target is to make the entire country digital”.
He added: We are laying the foundation for digital addressing solution in the country and we are sensitizing people on the significance of the project and the need to cooperate”.
This Project upon completion is expected to provide lots of benefits to the community of Kanifing Municipality (KM), including strengthening postal services, boost security, ambulance and health services and also transform business structures by giving rise to new businesses (e-commerce, taxi-services, fleet management, smart city and intelligent transportation etc)
This innovation will at the same time create more job opportunities and generate more income/revenue for people and businesses within the country.
The Ministry is therefore soliciting support from all property owners within the Kanifing Municipality (KM), to cooperate with the implementation team and allow them to fix the Address Boards (Tags) at their appropriate places.
