The Department of Fisheries under the Ministry of Fisheries, Water Resources and National Assembly Matters (MoFWR-NAMs) on Monday, 12 April 2021, commenced a two-day training for Fisheries data collectors on digitised fish price information.
Supported by the Food and Agriculture Organisation, the initiative is regionally integrated for food crises anticipation and management system in the Sahel to build resilience to poverty, and food and nutrition insecurity through the strengthening of data collection from the first generation (paper-based) to the second generation (digitised data collection system).
The digitised fish price data will provide information to the various players in time about the trend of fish and fishery product prices.
Anna Mbenga Cham, Director of Fisheries, explained that the digitised fish price data would help them make sound fish market decisions to inform policy on increased market opportunities, reduce frequent wastages; especially during glut periods.
“The system will facilitate and promote trade at national, sub-regional and international levels by providing the players with the information, and to improve the alert system and response to food crises,” she remarked.
Omar S.M Gibba, acting Permanent Secretary, MoFWR, noted that the Fisheries Ministry recognises the importance of reliable and accurate data for the management and conservation of the marine resources.
He commended CILLS through the project, Strengthening Resilience to Food Insecurity in the Sahel, initiated in the seven countries.
Mr Gibba then reassured of his ministry’s continual support while urging the participants to be meticulous in the collection of data to achieve the desired results at the end of the training.
