Capacity Building for Fisheries Personnel on ‘R Studio’ Underway

Banjul, 11th March 2025: The Department of Fisheries last week commenced ten-day R Studio training for its senior and middle management staff in Banjul.
R Studio is a powerful and versatile software platform widely used in fisheries research and data analysis. This training programme funded by the European Union Sector Support Programme, under the Strategic Target “Development of Scientific Capacity” aimed to build the capacities of personnel of the fisheries department through specialised training programmes on fisheries-related fields of study.
The fisheries personnel are being exposed to using R Studio for analysing fisheries data, introduce participants to data-limited stock assessment models suitable for Gambian fisheries, provide hands-on training on using R Studio for data analysis and stock assessment among other things.
The training is being delivered through a combination of theoretical lectures, practical exercises, and group discussions.
It is facilitated by experienced fisheries scientists and data analysts with expertise in R Studio and stock assessment supported by local experts on R Statistics from the Gambia Bureau of Statistics.
 The Department of Fisheries has declared its commitment to the sustainable management and development of the Gambian fisheries sector. This sector plays a vital role in food security, employment, and export earnings. 
To effectively manage fisheries resources, reliable data and robust analytical methods are essential. R Studio is a powerful and versatile software platform widely used in fisheries research and data analysis.
