The British High Commissioner to The Gambia, H.E. Harriet King, alongside William King, on Wednesday, 9th October 2024, hosted a reception for Gambian Olympians held at Admiralty House in Cape Point. The event brought together government officials, sports leaders, journalists, and partners, in honour of the accomplishments of Gambian Olympians in sports.
During her opening remarks, H.E. King underscored the importance of sports in fostering unity and promoting healthy living. She highlighted how sports can unite communities and expressed pride in The Gambia’s Olympic journey, which began in 1984, with the country participating in every Olympic Games since. She also acknowledged the nation’s hopes for its first Olympic medal and commended the inspiration Gambian athletes bring to their country.
Bakary Y. Badjie, the Minister of Youth and Sports, echoed these sentiments, expressing gratitude for the commitment and hard work of the Olympians. He praised their achievements at the African Games, with special recognition for Gina Bass’ victories in the 100 and 200 meters.
Badjie also acknowledged the contributions of athletes from the security sector, including those in the police and immigration services, highlighting the collaboration between sports and defense forces.
The event emphasised the enduring partnership between the UK and The Gambia, celebrating the role of sports in strengthening diplomatic ties. Both H.E. King and Minister Badjie applauded the dedication and achievements of Gambian athletes, who proudly represent their nation on the global stage.
