by Mariatou Ngum

The Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment made significant strides in empowering women farmers through its innovative SheTrades Hub initiative. Recently, the team visited Kartong, where women farmers from across the West Coast Region gathered to showcase and sell their locally produced onions to eager buyers.

This Local Onion Assembly represents a crucial step in the Ministry’s ongoing commitment to boost local production while addressing the persistent marketing challenges women farmers face. The vibrant gathering highlighted the extraordinary dedication and resilience the women demonstrate in contributing to The Gambia’s agricultural sector.

Mr. Kemo Janke, SheTrades Hub coordinator and principal economist at the Ministry, stated that these women aren’t just growing onions; they are cultivating economic independence and food security for our nation. He called upon all Gambians, especially our business community, to support these hardworking women by purchasing their high-quality, locally grown produce.

According to him, the event showcased how targeted support can strengthen agricultural value chains and improve market access for local producers. Through initiatives like SheTrades Hub, he said the Trade Ministry continues to prioritise women’s economic empowerment in agriculture as a pathway to sustainable development and food security.

Janke commended the women farmers of the West Coast Region for their tireless efforts and all partners who continue to support this important work.
