PS Jabang: Gov’t Committed to Partnering with Media to Widen Landscape for Free Expression

The Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services, Madam Cordu L Jabang,  has said that the government, through the Ministry has committed itself to engaging the media through The Gambia Press Union in regular dialogue, to fashion new laws and regulations designed to widen the media landscape for free expression.

The PS said this at the just concluded 8th edition of the AIPS Africa meeting hosted by Banjul. Speaking about the event at its start, the Permanent Secretary said The Gambia deserves the honour of hosting the event because of many reasons, chief among which, is the fact that for the past nine years under the government of His Excellency President Adama Barrow, “we have seen unprecedented progress in press and media freedoms and sporting success”.

She went on: “The combination of a free and secure working environment for the media, and our appreciable efforts at sporting excellence in football and athletics for example, has put our country firmly on the world map for the very good and positive reasons”.

She informed the meeting that The Gambia has consistently improved its press index rankings since 2018, and continues to build a healthy working relations between the press and the government.

She made reference to the President’s recent hosting of the 2nd Executive Dinner for the Media at State House, and the fact that there is no Gambian journalists in State custody or on trial in which the State has an interest.

Madam Jabang further highlighted the country’s achievements including the collaboration with GPU to launch its policy documents in ethics, complaints mechanisms and newsroom safety.
