The Ministry of Agriculture has taken a significant step toward advancing sustainable agriculture following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SPB Company aimed at introducing organic fertilizers to farmers across The Gambia.

The agreement, signed on April 29, seeks to launch a pilot initiative focused on improving agricultural productivity while preserving soil health through environmentally friendly farming practices.

The signing ceremony brought together key stakeholders, including SPB Company’s Chief Executive Officer Serigne Mansour Diagne, who led a delegation from Senegal.

Also participating in the engagement were representatives from Rohini Agro Group the International Finance Corporation, and the ROOTS Project, underscoring the broad institutional support behind the initiative.

Stakeholders described the partnership as part of a shared vision to modernise agriculture in The Gambia through innovative and sustainable solutions aimed at benefiting smallholder farmers and strengthening the agricultural value chain.

Among the key objectives of the collaboration are the promotion of sustainable farming practices, improved access to innovative agricultural inputs, and enhanced national food security.

Officials noted that the introduction of organic fertilizers is expected to improve soil fertility, reduce dependence on chemical inputs, and support long-term agricultural productivity.

According to officials, the pilot phase will provide an opportunity to assess the impact of the initiative, farmer adoption levels, and its overall effectiveness before any nationwide expansion.

The collaboration is being viewed as an important milestone in The Gambia’s agricultural development agenda, reflecting a growing shift toward climate-smart, resilient, and environmentally sustainable farming systems.

Stakeholders expressed optimism that such partnerships will contribute significantly to economic growth, improved rural livelihoods, and strengthened food security across the country.
