Efforts to improve the management and sustainability of livestock markets received a boost as the Small Ruminant Production Enhancement Project (SRPEP) concluded a three-day training for Livestock Market Committees.

The training, held from April 27th to 29th, brought together representatives from five regions where livestock markets have been established under the project. It forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen institutional capacity and improve the effectiveness of community-based market structures.

Participants underwent sessions on group management, governance, and leadership, with a focus on clearly defining roles and responsibilities within market committees. Facilitators emphasized that strong leadership is key to promoting transparency, accountability, and efficient resource management.

“Well-organized committees are better equipped to address challenges and create an enabling environment for livestock trade,” one facilitator noted.

Participants welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely given the critical role livestock markets play in rural livelihoods and the national economy. Many said the training would improve coordination and decision-making at the local level.

The SRPEP initiative is part of ongoing efforts to modernize the livestock sector by strengthening grassroots institutions and empowering local communities.

As the training concluded, participants pledged to apply the knowledge gained in their respective regions, signaling renewed commitment to improving livestock market governance and performance.
