In a significant step towards strengthening government communication, the Department of Information Services, under the Ministry of Information, Media, and Broadcasting Services, on Thursday, 22nd May 2025, held an engaging orientation session for newly appointed communications officers. This event marked their official induction and set the stage for their vital role in enhancing the government’s communication strategies.

The orientation commenced with a warm introduction from Principal Communications Officer Mr. Madiba Sillah, who welcomed the new members and introduced the management of the Department. “We are excited to have you on board,” he stated, emphasising the importance of their contributions. He highlighted the significant role of communication in helping to create a transparent society and emphasized that a comprehensive communications plan must be in place before their deployment to various ministries. “A strategic approach is essential for our success. Writing articles for the Gambia Daily Newspaper is not just a duty; it is about shaping public perception and informing citizens,” he explained.

Sillah also celebrated the rich history of the Gambia Daily Newspaper, noting its establishment during colonial times. “This publication has chronicled our nation’s journey, and our archives provide valuable insights into Gambia’s news history. It is a resource we must leverage in our efforts,” he remarked.

Following Sillah’s introduction, Mrs. Isatou Davies, the Director of Information Services, addressed the officers with an empowering message about the cornerstone values of integrity, good character, and work ethic. “As communications officers, you are the voice of the ministry. Your character and professionalism will reflect on our work,” she stated, underscoring the importance of ethical conduct in public service.

Mrs. Davies urged the officers to innovate and develop initiatives aimed at boosting social media engagement. “In today’s digital age, our online presence is crucial. Keep our ministry’s website vibrant and engaging,” she advised, reflecting the growing importance of digital communication in reaching broader audiences.

Ms. Sarata L. Bojang, another newly appointed communications officer, articulated her understanding of the role’s diverse responsibilities. “We will serve as the liaison for the ministry, managing all social media platforms while ensuring visibility for our initiatives and programmes,” she explained. Her commitment to disseminating internal communications effectively is vital in fostering transparency and building trust within the ministry and the public.

Deputy Director Ebrima Njie echoed the sentiments of his colleagues, reinforcing the department’s commitment to a supportive and collaborative environment. “Here, we are a family. We uplift one another and work together towards common goals,” he stated, creating a sense of belonging and mutual support among the new officers.

As the orientation concluded, the newly appointed communications officers left with a heightened sense of purpose and clarity about their roles. They are poised to play a crucial part in bridging the gap between the government and the citizens, ensuring that communication is not only effective but also transparent and engaging.

With their dedication to ethical communication and innovative strategies, these officers are set to enhance the government’s outreach efforts, fostering a more informed and connected society. This initiative represents a promising step forward in the government’s commitment to effective communication, paving the way for a more engaged citizenry.
