The Wikimedia User Group The Gambia recently organised a two-day workshop at the Brikama Area Council, bringing together diverse youth groups, including media personnel. The workshop aimed to raise awareness about Wikipedia and encourage Gambians to contribute local knowledge, culture, and history to the platform, promoting representation in all Wikimedia projects.
The facilitator, Mr. Gayo Bah emphasised the relevance of Wikimedia: “It offers a global platform to document and share Gambian stories, languages, biographies, and heritage for current and future generations. We can also utilise the Wikimedia Incubator to begin documenting our local languages, a vital step toward their preservation, digitalization, and inclusion in global knowledge platforms.”
The workshop was a significant step towards increasing local content on Wikipedia and recruiting new editors from The Gambia. Participants engaged in practical sessions on using Wikimedia tools to make contributions.
Binta S. Jawo, a participant and CEO of Besel Media, said the workshop enhanced her understanding of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia platforms. “I learnt how to edit articles responsibly, cite credible sources, and understand the notability criteria. I also discovered how journalists can use Wikimedia tools for research and storytelling, which will improve the quality and transparency of my reporting.”
She hopes to contribute by improving the representation of underreported stories and promoting inclusive narratives.
Mr. Bah called on Gambians to join the campaign by participating in training sessions, becoming contributors, and helping organise events or supporting the group.
