The Government of the Republic of The Gambia has strongly condemned the recent military coup in the Republic of Guinea-Bissau, describing the unconstitutional seizure of power as a direct assault on the democratic values cherished by the people of the country. The coup comes in the wake of the peaceful Presidential and Legislative elections held on 23rd November 2025, which the Gambian government says should have reflected the will of the Guinean people.
Expressing profound shock and deep concern, the Government of The Gambia denounced the action as a blatant violation of democratic principles and a serious setback to the hard-earned progress achieved by Guinea-Bissau and the wider ECOWAS region in advancing constitutional rule and democracy.
The Gambian government has called for the immediate restoration of constitutional order in Guinea-Bissau, urging all stakeholders to remain calm, exercise maximum restraint, and respect the democratic process. It emphasized the importance of allowing the people’s choice to guide the nation’s future, while advocating for peace, unity, and stability in the country.
In addition, The Gambia stressed that the security and fundamental rights of all citizens and foreign nationals in Guinea-Bissau including ECOWAS election observers and officials must be fully safeguarded.
Reiterating its solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau during this challenging period, the Government of The Gambia offered prayers for a swift return to peace, expressing hope that the efforts underway to restore order will succeed with the blessings of Allah Almighty.
