IDA Approves $52.6 Million Grant for Gambia Infrastructure Project

On May 29, 2025, the Board of Executive Directors of the International Development Association (IDA) approved a US$52.6 million grant to the Republic of The Gambia for the Gambia Infrastructure Project. The grant follows standard IDA terms.

The project aims to improve access to resilient transport and energy infrastructure in targeted regions while strengthening sectoral service delivery capacity.

It includes five components:

1. Resilient Infrastructure Access – ensuring reliable roads and energy networks

2. Policy and Planning – developing effective strategies~ and governance frameworks

3. Service Delivery Modernization – enhancing efficiency

4. Project Management and Capacity Building – supporting implementation and training

5. Contingent Emergency Response – addressing unforeseen challenges

Key investments focus on upgrading 60 km of rural and urban roads, as well as connecting 80 communities to the national electricity grid, directly benefiting approximately 40,000 people. Additionally, 100,000 urban residents, 65,000 of whom will also benefit from improved roads, will gain better access to electricity.

The project supports institutional capacity building for the Ministry of Transport, the National Road Authority, the Ministry of Petroleum, Energy and Mines, and the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority. It includes funding for project management and stakeholder training to ensure effective implementation and sustainability.
