Health Ministry Makes Progress in Containing, Managing Scabies Outbreak

In a press release issued on Friday, June 5th, the Ministry of Health provided an update regarding the recent scabies outbreak at an Islamic boarding school in Brufut, initially reported on May 26, 2025.

The Ministry informed that it has collaborated with key partners such as the Gambia Immigration Department, the Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Welfare, Child Protection Alliance, WHO, UNICEF, and the MRC Unit, The Gambia, in its efforts to contain and manage the outbreak.

On the progress and current situation, the release revealed that: Medical treatment has been successfully provided to all confirmed cases. Of the 57 affected students, the majority have shown significant improvement and are being closely monitored to ensure full recovery. Temporary relocation of all 102 resident children was completed to allow for effective fumigation, disinfection, and sanitation of the school environment. Enhanced surveillance and outreach continue in nearby schools and communities. No new cases have been identified beyond the 8 previously reported at the second school in Brufut. Health education and sensitization sessions have been conducted with students, school authorities, and community leaders to improve hygiene practices and raise awareness about the prevention of scabies and other skin conditions.

The Ministry assured that its Rapid Response Team remains on alert to provide technical support and ensure early detection and management of any new cases.

It therefore urges the public to maintain high standards of hygiene and immediately report any suspected cases of skin infections.

The Ministry went on to highlight key preventive actions, including:

•            Prompt medical care for children with itching or rashes.

•            Daily bathing and changing of clothes.

•            Washing bedding, towels, and clothes with hot water and drying them in direct sunlight.

•            Avoiding direct contact with affected individuals until they are treated.

The Health Ministry acknowledged the cooperation of parents, school authorities, and partners as they continue to respond to this incident. It urges the public to report suspected cases through the toll-free hotline: 1025.
