Gov’t Announces Availability of Cement, Calls for Public Support to Local Cement Industries

Banjul, 16th June 2025: The Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration and Employment (MoTIE) in a press release issued last week, informed the public and all stakeholders that Portland Cement is now readily available and the market has stabilized, following recent market disruptions caused by temporary shortages. The Ministry explained that the temporary shortage stemmed from readjustments and renegotiations of international supply contracts in response to the newly imposed U.S. tariffs.

“These issues have now been resolved, and cement supply chains have returned to normal.

Current National Stocks: Jah Multi Industries: 54,457 metric tons (MT); Gacem: 21,000 MT; Salam Cement: 59,000 MT”.

The release indicated that the following confirmed shipments: For Jah Multi Industries: 34,850 MT arriving on 15th June 2025; 44,150 MT arriving on 19th June 2025; 38,600 MT arriving on 22nd June 2025. For Gacem: 15,000 MT arriving on 14th June 2025; 15,000 MT arriving on 16th June 2025. For Salam Cement: 38,000 MT arriving on 30th June 2025”.

With these stocks and scheduled arrivals of bulk cement and related raw materials, the Government assures the public that the cement supply is secure and that market demand will continue to be met without disruption.

The current factory prices for Portland Cement are as follows: Jah Multi Industries – GMD 390 per bag for a 42.5R; Salam Cement – GMD 330 per bag for a 32.5R; Gacem – GMD 420 per bag for a 42.5R

“MoTIE calls on the general public to support local cement industries and participate actively in our national drive toward industrialisation. Strengthening domestic production and encouraging the use of locally available cement is not only key to ensuring long-term supply stability, but also vital for creating jobs, reducing import dependency, and building a more resilient economy. Public cooperation is essential as industrialization cannot succeed without collective commitment. Supporting local industries is the surest path to sustainable national development”.The Government, through the Trade Ministry, expressed commitment to safeguarding supply stability, promoting fair pricing, and supporting the smooth implementation of construction and infrastructure projects across the country.
