The Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC), in partnership with the Gambia Handball Association, is set to launch a five-day Technical Coaching Course aimed at enhancing the technical capabilities of local handball coaches and improving the overall standard of the sport nationwide.
The intensive training programme, scheduled to run from September 15th to 19th, 2025, will be held at the Seaview Garden Hotel in Kololi. The official opening ceremony is slated for today will feature dignitaries from the GNOC, Handball Association, and other key stakeholders in attendance.
According to GNOC officials, the initiative forms part of its wider mandate to promote, “Sport for All” and to equip Gambian coaches and athletes with the necessary tools to thrive both locally and on the international stage.
The course will combine theoretical lectures and practical on-court sessions, focusing on key areas such as tactical awareness, physical conditioning, player management, and game strategy. This blended approach aims to offer participants a well-rounded understanding of modern handball coaching techniques.
“The objective of this course is to empower our coaches with the latest technical skills and confidence needed to improve the quality of the game,” a GNOC official said. “Ultimately, this will translate into stronger team performances and greater representation of The Gambia in international handball competitions.”
Handball has been steadily gaining momentum in The Gambia, with the national association placing increased emphasis on grassroots development and building a pipeline of talent. Experts believe that initiatives like this coaching course are vital to long-term success, helping develop both the sport and its future stars.
Sports analysts also note that technical development programs are crucial for transforming coaching into a professional career path and empowering young athletes to reach their full potential on the continental and global stage.
The course will wrap up on September 19th with a closing ceremony that will celebrate participants who successfully complete the program — marking a new chapter in the advancement of handball in The Gambia.
