His Excellency Mohammed BS Jallow, the Vice President of the Republic of The Gambia, on Friday, 30th May, participated in a series of high-level engagements at the International Conference on Glaciers’ Preservation, currently being held in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The conference is convened under the theme: “Preserve Glaciers – Life Source of Our Planet”, drawing global attention to one of the most pressing climate issues of our time.
Keynote Address on Behalf of President Barrow and the People of The Gambia
Vice President Jallow delivered a powerful keynote address on behalf of His Excellency President Adama Barrow and the people of The Gambia. In his remarks, the Vice President emphasised the urgency of addressing glacial melting, highlighting the need for climate-responsive and transformative solutions that are integrated and transboundary. He reaffirmed The Gambia’s commitment to global climate action that safeguards water security, food security, and the resilience of vulnerable communities.
The Vice President underscored the importance of strategic international cooperation to enhance technical capacities, foster knowledge sharing, and promote the adoption of best practices in glacier preservation efforts.
Roundtable Discussion with Global Leaders
In a separate engagement, Vice President Jallow joined a high-level roundtable discussion with fellow global leaders. The discussion focused on the critical importance of limiting global warming, which remains the only viable path to preserving glaciers and their essential ecosystem services. He also addressed climate financing and adaptation needs, calling for bold, unified global action to support vulnerable nations.
Bilateral Meeting with the Secretary General of the Convention on Wetlands
Vice President Jallow also held a productive bilateral meeting with Dr. Musonda Mumba, Secretary General of the Convention on Wetlands. Discussions focused on The Gambia’s efforts to prevent saltwater intrusion into freshwater systems, and the government’s commitment to protecting vital natural resources that support agriculture, marine life, and broader ecosystems.
Through these engagements, Vice President Jallow reaffirmed The Gambia’s unwavering commitment to climate resilience, environmental sustainability, and global solidarity in the fight against climate change.
