By Momodou Sey

A Gambian delegation led by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, representing the Minister of Youth and Sports, participated in the 2026 YouthConnekt Sahel Forum, held from 10 to 12 August in Niamey, Niger.
The forum was held under the theme, “Sahelian Youth: Refoundation, Security and Prosperity for a Sovereign, United and Resilient Sahel.”
It brought together youth ministers, young leaders and other key stakeholders to advance discussions on the institutionalisation, sustainability and governance of the YouthConnekt Sahel Forum, established as the first regional platform of YouthConnekt Africa.
A major focus of the forum was the institutionalisation of YouthConnekt Sahel, including the validation of its Charter, governance pillars and procedures for hosting future editions.

Participants also discussed mechanisms for monitoring and following up on commitments and recommendations arising from previous editions, particularly in line with the N’Djamena Declaration.
The forum further explored ways to develop YouthConnekt Sahel into a sustainable, legitimate and effective regional platform for economic, social and civic transformation.

Discussions emphasised the importance of strengthening regional cooperation and ensuring that the priorities of young people across the Sahel are reflected in continental youth policy processes.
The Permanent Secretary also participated as a panellist in a session on “Social Cohesion and the Peace Dividend: Youth, Prevention of Violent Extremism, and Community Security.”

The session highlighted the critical role of young people in preventing violent extremism, strengthening social cohesion and building peaceful and resilient communities across the Sahel.
As YouthConnekt Sahel enters a new phase of institutionalisation, The Gambia reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening youth leadership, regional solidarity and meaningful youth participation in shaping the future of the Sahel.
The Gambian delegation also included Basiru Jaye, YouthConnekt Focal Person for The Gambia; Jabou Sisawo, Speaker of the National Youth Parliament; and Muhammed Dibbasey, Youth Delegate.
