The 2026 May Day celebrations ended on a high note as the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF) emerged overall champions of the games organised by the National Sports Council under the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
GAF delivered a commanding performance throughout the tournament, finishing top of the standings with 166 points. Their consistency across multiple disciplines proved decisive in securing the coveted title.
The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) placed second with 144 points, while the Gambia Fire and Rescue Service (GFRS) secured third place on 135 points. The Gambia Police Force (GPF) finished fourth with 125 points despite strong performances across several events.
In one of the closest contests, the Gambia National Petroleum Company (GNPC) and Gambia Ferry Services shared fifth place, both recording 110 points.
The National Water and Electricity Company (NAWEC) finished seventh with 106 points, followed by Alport Banjul with 99 points, Gambia International Airlines (GIA) on 98 points, and Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) with 94 points to complete the top ten.
Other including Yonna, the Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA), the Judiciary, GMA, and the Medical Research Council Unit The Gambia (MRCG), also recorded notable performances, reflecting the depth of competition.
Held as part of the International Workers’ Day celebrations, the event brought together over two dozen institutions from across the public and private sectors, showcasing unity, teamwork, and institutional pride.
From athletics to team sports, participants competed with determination, drawing strong support and creating a vibrant atmosphere throughout the games.
The National Sports Council described the event as a success, highlighting its role in promoting healthy lifestyles, strengthening relationships among workers, and fostering national cohesion.
As the curtain falls on this year’s celebrations, GAF’s triumph stands as a testament to preparation, discipline, and teamworkqualities that defined not only the champions but the spirit of May Day 2026.
