Fass Against COVID-19, a social movement of people of Fass Njaga Choi village both in The Gambia and the Diaspora has donated over a hundred households with food items worth one hundred and twenty thousand Dalasi.

The items which included bags of rice, sugar, cooking oil and onions were meant to assist needy families during the lock-down as well as month of Ramadan. It could be recalled that the movement supported their village two weeks ago with sanitary materials to ensure there is hygiene within the community.

They also sensitised the community on WHO and Ministry of Health recommendations and guidelines.

Speaking at the food items distribution, Alhagie Wally Corr, chairman of the organisation, said it is their responsibility as natives of the community both at home and abroad to give back. He added that they will continue to come up with initiatives that will benefit the community.

Mr Corr thanked all those who in one way or the other contributed in making the day possible.

Baboucarr Nyang, communications and information expert for the movement, said the items will go a long way towards supporting families during the partial lock-down.

Fatou Sonko, Fass Village Development Committee chairperson expressed delight at the generosity and thanked the sons and daughters of Fass for being there for their community during this difficult time.

She noted that the lock-down affected everybody in the country particularly those in the rural community whose lives and livelihood depend on minimal earnings.

Madam Sonko also called on those who can to support their communities; particularly single mothers and the elderly.

Bintou Corr, financial controller for Fass Against COVID-19 said women and children are really vulnerable during these trying times; hence the reason the youth of the community decided to come up with an initiative to support them. “If you tell people to stay at home it is obvious that they will need to eat and survive”, she said, adding that in that regard they will need people to support them; thus the organisation’s food basket initiative. “Let us come together and support the needy”, she told government, philanthropists and all those who can support. “Sharing is our best option”, she concluded.
