As part of events commemorating the Global Week of Climate Action, Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Natural Resources on Thursday, 19th September 2024 joined Global Platform The Gambia to raise awareness on climate change, social justice, and gender equality. This initiative by Global Platform The Gambia is a welcomed gesture as it complements the Ministry’s efforts towards achieving the goal for a sustainable future. Speaking on behalf of Hon. Minister Rohey John Manjang, Mr. Momodou Kanyi emphasised that climate change poses a significant threat to The Gambia by altering weather patterns, increasing extreme weather events, and contributing to rising sea levels. “These impacts heighten vulnerabilities in coastal and agricultural areas, leading to increased risks of flooding, coastal erosion, and reduced agricultural productivity”.

He further noted that the social and environmental challenges create a complex landscape of risks that undermine sustainable development and the well-being of communities. He assured that the Ministry remains committed to working hand-in-hand with young people and platforms like Global Platform The Gambia to champion vital causes for the future of our planet. The Assistant Programme Manager of Global Platform emphasised the importance of climate justice, noting that achieving it would make the world a better place. He highlighted the need for increased climate finance, especially for countries in the Global South, to help them adapt to the effects of climate change. While emphasizing the call for polluters to pay, the Assitant Manager expressed gratitude to the Ministry for their support and collaboration with the youth of the country, ensuring that their demands for climate justice are heard.

Global Platform The Gambia, is an initiative of Action Aid International The Gambia that focuses on building the capacity of young people in leadership, activism, and civic engagement, with special attention to climate change, social justice, and gender equality.
