As the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) marks its 50th anniversary, the Commission has intensified efforts to popularize its long-term blueprint, Vision 2050, through a strategic dissemination mission in The Gambia.

The initiative aims to raise public awareness of the regional body’s plan for deeper integration and shared prosperity, and to advance the transition from a “States ECOWAS” to a “Peoples ECOWAS.”

Led by Mr. Gbogboto Bundu Musa, the ECOWAS delegation engaged lawmakers, civil society groups, media professionals, and students in Banjul. Discussions centred on inclusive participation and the role of citizens in shaping the future of the regional bloc.

ECOWAS Resident Representative in The Gambia, Her Excellency Miatta Lilly French, highlighted the importance of citizen involvement, while Special Adviser on Communications Mr. Abdoulie Gassama underscored the media’s responsibility in raising awareness. Both noted that stakeholder feedback will be vital in tailoring Vision 2050’s implementation to the needs of West Africans.

As part of the ECOWAS at 50 celebrations, the Gambian National Assembly hosted a high-level sensitization session to familiarize lawmakers with Vision 2050. Speaking on behalf of the Clerk of the Assembly, Deputy Clerk for Administration and Finance Mr. Buba M.E. Jatta described the gathering as a pivotal moment in ECOWAS history. He emphasized that the bloc has evolved well beyond economic cooperation to become central to peace, security, democratic governance, and the daily lives of citizens. Popularizing Vision 2050, he added, equips lawmakers with the tools to align regional goals with the aspirations of the Gambian people.

Hon. Amadou Camara, a member of the ECOWAS Parliament, stressed that Vision 2050 is not a bureaucratic exercise, but a promise of peace, opportunity, and dignity for all West Africans. He noted that Gambian representatives remain vocal in committee work and regional debates, ensuring the country’s voice is heard in shaping ECOWAS priorities.

Resident Representative French commended the strong legislative turnout, describing it as a clear signal of The Gambia’s commitment to ECOWAS. “The Gambia remains one of the strongest members of ECOWAS,” she remarked, praising the country’s consistent fulfilment of its obligations. She further stressed that the support of the National Assembly is crucial in advancing ECOWAS goals locally and ensuring that regional policies are successfully domesticated.
