President Adama Barrow has highlighted road infrastructure, healthcare and agricultural modernisation as key priorities of his administration during his ongoing nationwide development tour of the Central River Region (CRR).
The President’s visit included a general meeting in the historic town of Njau under the theme “Bridging Communities, Building Prosperity,” as well as the inauguration of health facilities, the launch of a major road project and an inspection of a solar-powered irrigation scheme aimed at boosting rice production.
The engagements provided an opportunity for the President to assess ongoing development projects, interact with communities and receive updates from project implementers and government officials.
Roads to Strengthen Rural Connectivity
At Njau, President Barrow laid the foundation stone for a 52-kilometre road project intended to improve connectivity across the Sanjal district.
He also officially inaugurated a newly completed 12-kilometre all-weather road in Njau, opening it to the community and surrounding areas.
Speaking at the meeting, President Barrow said improved road infrastructure would directly support farmers, strengthen food security, stimulate agribusiness and facilitate the movement of food and other goods across the country.
He described the roads as more than physical infrastructure, saying they serve as vital links between farmers and markets, children and schools, and families and healthcare services.
The President commended the National Roads Authority (NRA) and local contractors for the standard of work on the Njau Loop and urged them to maintain the same quality on the 52-kilometre Sanjal project.
He also called on young people to take advantage of the economic opportunities created by improved infrastructure and urged residents to protect public property against misuse and vandalism.
Building Rural Prosperity
The President’s CRR engagements highlighted the Government’s broader approach to rural development, linking infrastructure investment with agricultural production, healthcare access and economic opportunity.
Improved roads are expected to facilitate the movement of farmers and goods, while new health facilities will bring essential services closer to rural communities. At the same time, irrigation and agro-logistics investments are intended to increase domestic food production and reduce post-harvest losses.
President Barrow urged communities to take ownership of the infrastructure being delivered and called on young people to use the opportunities created by these investments to contribute to local economic development.
The projects, taken together, form part of the Government’s stated effort to strengthen rural connectivity, improve essential services and build a more productive and food-secure economy.
